Grecia fuera del mundial!

World Champions, Ranked Number 1 in the world but not going to the World Cup. The Greek's have failed to qualify from European Group 2, we look at the reasons why.

Expectations Of A Nation

Former Greek NC bull7 took Greece further than they could have dreamed, perhaps fortunate with the likes of China and Sweden going out in the early stages of the knockout stages but they won all the matches put in front of them. He decided not to put himself up to be re-elected as Greek NC and the new manager would have to attempt to live up to the previous manager's achievements.

There was no landslide victory in the 2007 elections, the current manager jimbax76 winning by just 3 votes in the end. 178 people voted for his nearest rival vazelosss13 and that would mean his appointment wasn't going to be a massively popular one for his nearest opponent's followers. He would have to convince him as well as trying to qualify for the World Cup

Seeding

Several people expected Greece to qualify for the World Cup as holders, that would not going to be the case and their ranking of 11 when the draw was made put them into the second pot of the seedings. Had they been ranked 10th, they would have made the top seeding. That meant they could have been drawn with the likes of Netherlands, Sweden, England and their World Cup finalists, Poland.

European Group 2

Cyprus, Slovenia and Luxembourg weren't going to be massively difficult to beat. An ever improving Estonia and their World Cup finalists Poland would be the major pretenders to them qualifying for the 2007 World Cup.

Getting Poland in the opening match was the worst possible start, the new Greek manager would have to play the nation who most wanted to beat them in his first competitive match in charge. They lost 2-1. Then they played Estonia in their second match and lost that 3-2 away in Tallinn, they were faced an uphill struggle from that moment on.

Their 4-0 loss in Warsaw against Poland made the match against Estonia at home a must win match. They lost 3-2 again to Estonia and that meant they had to rely on results going their way for them to qualify.

Estonia's 5-0 win over Cyprus meant Greece's defence of their World Cup ended at the qualifying stage.

The reprecussions of their failure to reach the World Cup will only be felt after the World Cup has finished and their undoubted slip from the #1 World Ranking spot that would secure them a top seeding going into the European Qualifiers over the summer. They will be at least a second seed maybe even a third seed meaning another difficult qualification group.

If 2006 was Greece's most successful year, 2007 may become Greece's toughest year at International level.
